Meal Plan

It feels good to eat well (and healthy)
Making small changes in your diet can better help you manage your health.  Some conditions are aggravated and made worse by certain foods.

The Renal Diet is one low in potassium, phosphorus and protein if you are pre-dialysis and low in potassium, phosphorus, and sodium but high in high-quality proteins if you're on dialysis.  A list of high-quality proteins can be found in the e-book download You Need Your Kidneys and Your Kidneys Need You.

If your kidneys failed due to diabetes, which is the #1 leading cause of renal failure, you'll also need to watch your carbohydrate, starch and sugar intake. 
Breakfast
 
1 whey protein shake
1/4 cup of frozen blueberries or strawberries 
or 1/4 cup of rolled oats
 
Since I am on dialysis I have to have a high-quality protein with each meal because protein is drawn off during the dialysis process.  I must keep my protein (albumin) levels greater than or equal to 4 in order to maintain my lean muscle and fight against infections.

If you don't care for lettuce, I often make a chicken salad out of minced chicken breast, a little fresh dill, finely chopped red onion and mayonnaise.  I serve them in baby bell peppers sliced lengthwise.

Dinner
 
Lean meat or chicken
1 cup green beans
1 cup carrots
1 apple
 
Because of the dietary restrictions, we with kidney disease sometimes struggle with consuming enough calorites while also eating the right foods.  Having a hearty portion of high-quality protein and vegetables for dinner is a great way to get your calories in .

Air popped popcorn
 
When purchasing packaged pre-popped popcorn , be sure to read the label for the sodium content per serving.  Even though a bag is small, it may be more than one serving.  The sodium content is multiplied by the number of servings in the bag.
